1985 map notes
At the Multnomah County Central Library
- "Light Rail Future Route" and a scenic drive are shown. The latter went around the City Center, thru Washington Park and to Council Crest
- This map also functioned as a street map and had a big street index; it is copyrighted by both TriMet & Metro
- Even though the logo said "TRI-MET", "Tri-Met" was used elsewhere
- Pass Plus: "Use your Tri-Met Monthly Pass for discounts at more than 300 area businesses YOU CAN ALSO USE IT TO RIDE THE BUS".
- Service on bridges:
- Hawthorne: 4 6 10 14 31 32 33
- Steel: none
- Broadway: 1 4 5 9 40 41 55 77 85 91
- Burnside: 8 10 14 18 19 20 91
- Ross Island: Same as today except the 66
The absence of Steel Bridge service may be due the bridge being closed for MAX work or the lack of a transit center at the end of it.
- 5th Ave had 1 less line then it had recently, but there may have been more total buses (it is said that MAX has resulted in less buses on the mall)
- Also in downtown Portland, Washington Street had 5 lines, vs. 3 today; Salmon had 2
There was an intersection of 98th & Powell. According to where you look, today's short-lined 9-Powell buses go to "98th & Powell" or "TO 98TH AVE" or "POWELL GARAGE" (the last one was seen on a Portland Mall shelter video screen, as if its a big thing to people in general). See here, for example
Today, this intersection does not exist and Powell Garage is where 98th Ave would be on the south side. There may be some irony if bus trips did not end there until the intersection was taken out and the garage built. And if you look at today's system map, there is Frequent Service extending S from Powell into the garage.
- There were seperate maps for Owl (overnight) service and for C-TRAN service into Portland
- There was no service at today's Gateway Transit Center
- Washington Square Transit Center was on the west side of mall. From when it moved until recently, buses have gone around the west (~back) side of the mall even though there were no stops.
- Many lines followed the same general routing that they do today: Greeley (was #1), 9 (both), 10-Harold, 17-Holgate, 34, 35, 43, 45, 54, 55, 56 & 75
- Some other lines had slight differences but were otherwise the same:
- Lines 8 and 10 had different routings through the Lloyd District
- 1-Vermont only did the north loop; another line went thru the area south of Vermont St
- 4-Division infequently went out past Gresham to Sandy and Boring (now served mostly by Line 84)
- Line 5 went up Interstate Ave to Vancouver and down Barbur Blvd to Sherwood (today's Line 12). It also had a loop thru King City
- Today's Line 12-Sandy Blvd was #ed 14; it went up Sandy Blvd to Parkrose and then east into the neighborhood
- Line 14 used 54th/52nd to get between Hawthorne Blvd & Foster Road
- Line 17 went out St Helens Rd but not past Linnton; also, it travelled via 21st, Raleigh, 23rd (ramp from I-405 ended at 21st), Nicolai, Industrial, St Helens (not Yeon as today--this area was served by Lines 56 and 53)
- Today's 18-Hilside was #ed 66
- Line 19-Woodstock had the same route to SE 72nd, but then went north and ended at Foster and I-205
- Line 20 went from NW 23rd to Mount Hood Community College but took 78th/80th between Burnside and Stark Streets, not 102nd like today
- Line 36 went only to Boones Ferry/McEwan (opposite I-5 from today's Tualitan Park and Ride, which didn't exist)
- Wilsonville was served by Line 38
- Today's Lines 22 & 23 were one line, #40
- Line 63 went between SW 1st and the zoo
- On the north end, Line 70 went to Emanuel Hospital via Broadway, Interstate and Russel
- Line 79 went to Kaiser Medical Center (along with Line 76)
- Today's 15-Belmont (#ed 21) took 92nd between Yamhill & Stark/Washington; past that, it went down Market, Main, and 182nd to Powell and The Village.
- 19-Glisan went to Birdsdale (202nd?), then down to Stark and to Gresham
- Line 31 went to Estacada but via Lake, Webster and Roots Roads
- The Fremont bus was #ed 41 and went down 102nd to end at Washington Street
- Line 49-Arnold Creek served the area SE of Barbur Blvd Transit Center
- Infrequent Line 56 went via Everett/Glisan, 18th/19th, Thurman/Vaughn, and finally out Yeon
- Today's Lines 57 & 58 were combined. Also, some Line 57 trips used Sunset Hwy and went directly to Hillsboro. Line 57 was the only line shown in the Hillsboro inset; it goes off the map towards Corneilus
- Line 71 went from Swan Island to 72nd as the 72 does today, but then down Cully, 60th, 52nd and Flavel to end at Mt Scott.
- Line 72 went from Clackamas Town Center up 82nd to the airport
- Lines 76 and 78 were part of one corridor as they are today...but on the eastside between Milwaukie and Clackamas Town Center. Line 76 went via King and down Price Fuller; Line 78 went north of King then along Linwood and Harmony (approx. today's Line 28)
- In the Beaverton area, infrequent Line 87 was the only bus line in the area south of Allen Blvd, west of Hall Blvd and NW of Scholls Ferry/121st (there did not appear to be a whole lot of streets there)
- There was no service on I-5 (today's Line 96)
- There was no Line 15-NW 23rd Ave. Line 53 went from Burnside up to Northrup, then over to 25th, up to Upshur and finally to Gordon/Thurman
- Line 77-Beltline went all over: From 47th and Glisan down Broadway, Lovejoy, Westover and Burnside to Cedar Hills (across Sunset Hwy from today's Sunset Transit Center), then down Hall Blvd and finally the route of today's Line 76 to Lake Oswego
